Proper Framing and
Matting
LIMITED EDITION PRINTS
Inadequate
or improper matting and framing can cause damage to your art print. Discoloration
and deterioration are cause by use of standard
non-conservation mat board. Acids contained in these standard mats can
cause paper to turn brown, become brittle and eventually deteriorate
when removed from the frame.
In matting of your
art print, only rag conservation board with ph factor of 7.5 should be
used. for both the mounting board behind the print as well as the mat
or mats used on top of the print.
Non-rag
conservation mat board, with it s wide range of colors and textures, can
be used for matting, as long as the inside of the mat, which is in constant
direct contact with the print, is lined with at least a 2-ply rag conservation
board. Only all-rag, ph 7.5 acid free materials should be in direct contact
with the front or back of the print. This includes the hinges, which suspend
the print under the mat. The print should never be mounted or permanently
secured to the mounting board by any method.
IF THE ORIGINAL CONDITION OF THE PRINT IS ALTERED IN ANY WAY IT WILL AFFECT
THE COLLECTOR VALUE.
Depend on highly experienced picture framers for advice on matting and
framing.
